Description:
 Ethyl carbamate (also called urethane) is a chemical compound with the molecular formula C3H7NO2 first prepared in the nineteenth century. Structurally, it is an ester of carbamic acid. Despite its common name, it is not a component of polyurethanes.
Urethane is a colorless crystal or white powder that is flammable, odorless and has a cool taste similar to saltpetre. Melting point 48-50℃, boiling point 182-184℃, 103℃ (7.2kpa) sublimation, relative density 0.9862 ℃, flash point 92℃. Soluble in water, ethanol, ether and glycerin, slightly soluble in trichloromethane and olive oil. Aqueous solution is neutral.
Urethane is used as an intermediate in medicines, pesticides, and spices. It is used in the production of sleeping pills and tranquilizers. Used as brucine, resorcinol antidote, fungicide, injection solvent and dyeing industry colorant, also can be used in biochemical research. In addition, urane itself can be used as a proprietary drug, with anti-cancer properties, used in the treatment of multiple myeloma and chronic leukemia.
