Description:
Glycogen is the molecule that functions as the secondary long-term energy storage in animal and fungi cells. It is made primarily by the liver and the muscles, but can also be made by glycogenesis within the brain and stomach.Glycogen is the analogue of starch, a less branched glucose polymer in plants, and is commonly referred to as animal starch, having a similar structure to amylopectin. Glycogen is found in the form of granules in the cytosol in many cell types, and plays an important role in the glucose cycle.
Glycogen is widely distributed in mammalian and other animal tissues, such as liver, muscle and other highly dispersed branches of dextran, used for energy storage.
Glycogen is a kind of storage form of sugar in animals, and its function is the same as that of starch in plants, so it has the name of "animal starch". It is distributed widely in animal tissues and stored in liver and muscle, which is very important for intermediate metabolism. It is similar to starch, dry state is amorphous powder. Glycogen reacts with iodine to produce a reddish brown color. Its structure is similar to amylopectin. It is mainly a-fed glucose, which is bound by a-l, 4-sugar bond. The average length of each branch is equivalent to 12-18 glucose molecules.
